A carpet texture created by shearing either level loop or high-low loop carpet lightly so that only the higher loops are sheared. The sheared areas are less reflective than the unsheared loops which appear brighter and lighter in color. Random shearing of high-low loop carpet produces a texture somewhat similar to cut and loop.

Man made. Cellulosic based from wood pulp.
remnant
A short piece of carpet roll goods usually less than nine feet long.
repeat
The distance from a point in a pattern figure to the same point where it occurs again, measuring lengthwise of the fabric.
residential contract
Less expensive residential type used in modular homes, tract homes, economy hotels/motels. Very cost competitive purchased by builder directly from mill.
residential market
Carpet used in the home. sold from the mill through distributor/retailer chain.
resilience
The ability of a carpet fabric or padding to spring back to its original shape or thickness after being crushed or walked upon.
resist-printing
A dye resist agent is printed on tufted carpet prior to piece dyeing producing colored patterns.
restretch
A
carpet installation term used to describe carpet stretching performed subsequent to original
carpet installation to remove wrinkles, bubbles, or loose fit. Most restretching is caused by failure of the installer to adequately stretch the carpet during original
carpet installation. Restretching should be performed with power stretchers and not with knee kickers. This is true of all stretching operations in overpad tackless stripcarpet installations.
reversed pile direction
Carpet is directional and the pile leans in the manufactured direction. If the manufactured pile direction is reversed during installation and two pieces are seamed together that are manufactured in opposite directions, a
color change will develop at the seam. this is due to a difference in the way light is reflected by the pile lean. This is an installation defect.
rotary brushing
A
carpet cleaning technique in which a detergent solution is worked into the pile by a motor-driven rotating brush. Loosened soil and spent solution is often subsequently removed by vacuum.
rows/wires
Rows of tufts counting lengthwise in one-inch of carpet. In
Axminster carpets, these are called rows; in Wilton and velvet, wires.
rubber
A cushioned carpet back which may be applied in various forms, such as contoured, compressed or slab. Also, as a separate rug or
carpet cushion (carpet padding).
rug
Carpet cut into room or area dimensions and loose laid.
runner
a textile or hard
surface flooring material used along the length and width of a traffic
area to prevent carpet soiling. Runners are typically found in
hallways, entry ways, stairways, and outside of a building to limit soil
from penetrating the structure.
